Bibbulmun Track 3-4: ups and downs on (rather) flat ground.

Petite famille de randonnée

Little hiking family

After a rest day in the charming hostel of Walpole, my next towns to reach were Northcliffe and then Pemberton. I left motivated and skiped the first shelter, quite close to Walpole, therefore starting with a rather long day of 25 km. I knew that Laura, a young German woman I had met a few days earlier, would be sharing the next shelters with me, and that she was planning, as well, to walk alone until Kalamunda after having hiked the first two sections with her boyfriend, now on his way back to Europe for work obligations. We therefore shared the same destiny from now on.

I arrived before her at the shelter on that day and met a man who was there by himself and welcame me saying « I did not expect anyone tonight ». I answered that I was sorry, smiling, but I already knew that I loved him. Mel, 70 years old, living around Perth, walking the Bibbulmun Track « again » so he could « stay fit ». He knew the track by heart and definitely knew what he was doing. His smile seemed to shine in the whole shelter and I was very impressed by his full outfit he had made himself with some sleeping bags. No need to bring extra jacket or warm clothes then. The rest of his gear was equally smart and allowed him to carry a bag probably twice smaller and lighter than my dear FatBoy.

After a very pleasant day, I was happy to meet again with Laura and Mel at the shelter, and we had already found a great group dynamic. Conversations with Mel were rich and long and I was enjoying them, as my sens of humor were similar to him and I really liked his straight forward attitude mixed with a true and touching kindness. When he left ahead of us on the morning of the fifth day, determined to take one of his shortcuts, I was sad to tell him goodbye. But he left Laura and myself his phone number, for in case we would need any help. I know that he will not read these lines because he hates internet, but thank you Mel.

Le moral dans les chaussures

Foot pain and feeling low

Before that though, on the third day, a pain grew sharper inside my right foot, until I sat down in the middle of this black path, surrounded by burnt trees with fresh green plants growing around them, view that was making me extremely sad in itself… The heat was intense, with no breeze, and I could smell some bush fire probably dozens of kilometres away.

I found myself sitting down in the middle of the path a few times in about three hours, my heart too heavy and my foot too painful to go ahead, negative thoughts attacking me. Perhaps, I would never reach my goal, perhaps, I had overestimated myself. For sure, I had underestimated the Bibbulmun Track, comparing it too much with the Te Araroa in New Zealand, that I knew was three times longer and much harder. But I decided to stop that, and to consider my experience for what it was with no comparison, in its own and whole dimension, that I seemed to measure a bit more now, suddenly, on my fifth dumb break of the day, alone on that burning track.

I pass all the details, but yes, globally I was not feeling great, rather useless and weak. Do you know that little nasty voice whispering « who do you think you are ? ». And then I remembered that I had said I was impatient to know what my shit days would be. Apparently, I was right into it. It was time to start the next stage: to learn and to evolve from it.

Obviously, finding Mel and Laura at the shelter made me smile again and Mel made me have a cold feet bath before anything else. Divine. The two following days happened to be really interesting. I left early and broke my speed records, noticing that pain was sharper after each break and easing once my muscles were fully engaged. And I relaxed my body and my mind, focusing on my breath, on the lightness of my steps, my hands holding my hiking poles more gently, my eyes admiring these tall trees and tiny birds. I added long tiger balm massages each night in my tent.

I was focusing on some of the learnings from books like the ones of Eckhart Tolle or James Redfill especially, and from my recent experience in terms of yoga and meditation. Letting go on my resistence, accepting things as they were, leading my intentions in a positive way and being the witness of my thoughts, letting those polluting ones go slowly to leave some space to others.

However, on the last two days before reaching Northcliffe, I was struggling again to focus on the experience and I just wanted to arrive there, and I was getting obsessed by the idea of a shower. Besides, on the last night before reaching Northcliffe, I stayed sitting down for a long time, watching about twenty white tails black cocatoes who were partying between the trees, and then the night falling and the unbelievable stars raising in a clear sky. And I smiled for myself, witnessing that thought inside me again, saying how much I loved this way of life

Northcliffe

I arrived right on time for the opening of the Northcliffe hotel, at 11am, and almost begged the receptionist for a room and a shower. She made it happen, laughing when I apologized about looking so disgusting. She lied and said I looked just fine. After the best shower if my life, I walked around the few buildings of Northcliffe, and found Doug that I had met on the week-end of delivering my parcels. He was working at the beautiful little organic shop Karri Country Good Food, and he was all happy to see me again. We talked with a lot of energy, mainly about the beauty of the forests, and I left full of Joy with my parcel and some delicious fresh products.

I managed my next mission successfully (laundry), and was then feeling like a new woman, ready for a good night sleep. It was raining in the morning and I was almost happy to have a good excuse to take my time before leaving for the next section, of only three days, until Pemberton. The idea of walking only three days after this long seven days section was extraordinary for my mood.

I hanged at the cute little cafe of Northcliffe until the early afternoon, just enough time to have one of these unbelievable and spontaneous encounters, with a woman interested in my project and telling me about her own very positive experience with headspace, the association I am raising funds for. All I needed to get a boost of energy and the necessary enthusiasm to go back on the track.

La forêt enchantée

The magic forest

About three minutes after leaving Northcliffe, a big rainshower fell on me and I had just enough time to take my jacket of my pack, laughing. I was ready and happy, welcoming this rain with joy. I had a wonderful day. The weather was cheeky, clouds, rain, sunshine, crazy winds in the trees, sudden stilness. The sky was fascinating, changing constantly. I loved it, wanted more of it, amazed. Maybe was it reminding me of New Zealand that I love so much, or maybe, simply, this kind of unsettling weather give me a pure feeling of freedom and reset my confidence into a life that embrace uncertainty.

It was only me and a rainbow on the dam next to the campsite on that night. I had found peace again and joy in this adventure. I was almost feeling like it was my very first night once again. I expressed my gratitude to the Bibbulmun Track before falling asleep in a cold night.

This enthusiasm lasted for the two following days and I progressed, in awe between these spendid karri trees, giant and so beautiful, of the gumtree family. I seemed to see metaphoris at every step, between these barks that fall layer after layer, revealing warm colors and the different skins of these huge beings. At one place, these trees half burnt, and life all green growing around the darkness left by fire… Actually, I was full of inspiration and seemed to be writing books inside my head. I was over sensitive among so much beauty and was happy of each light and color.

Just before Pemberton, I knew that I had reached 400 kilometres on the Bibbulmun Track, but also that my foot pain was almost gone and that my mood was about excellent. Yes, I was going to take a day to rest after ten days walking in a row. But I was already ready for what was next.
