Bibbulmun Track section 1, d’Albany a Denmark

Here we are, the adventure began deliciously! I am in Denmark, all happy after my first four hiking days. I am full of an energy I never knew I had, totally positive. I could talk about the good and the bad of these first days hiking, but what for? For now, and I know it might not be always like this, but for now there is no bad or good, only situations to which I can attach diverse emotions, from which I can learn, grow, or just simply through which I can breath and live. Here are some of these.

Sophie a Denmark

Four days hiking, about 75 km and a backpack of about 18 kg, how is my body reacting?

Yes, I will start with this because I suppose that it is the first question I was asking myself before even starting. Well… very good news and I am surprised and all happy. For now, I feel at my best. I spent the first two days in a extraordinary physical energy, moving faster that I was even trying to do, considering the weight of my pack without suffering from it, thanking FatBoy to actually be better than the best hiking backpack I could have dreamt of, relieved to notice that maybe, yes, my training since December was worth it (not long and intense enough in my opinion)… I have to agree that having quality gear, especially the backpack, shoes and hiking poles, makes a big difference. Yes, poles actually. It is the first time ever that I use some, having always refused this idea as a sign to obvious that I was ageing if I was starting to buy hiking poles… Well, anyway, I am ageing, who does not? But more seriously, it is incredible the strength, rhythm, support and help (especially on sandy or ascending sections) they provide… I suppose that they give a relief to the knees more than I can imagine, and that is a weak point for me. So, yes, very happy of this decision too.

Albany to Denmark

A suivre.

My little feet have been feeling great on these four days too. No blister, no issue at all. I have the new Vivo Barefoot offered by Tim, of Box33, and it is true that I have to get used to feel the floor more than with other hiking boots, but anyway, this section being mainly on sand, it was a very nice feeling. I will see how it goes on harder ground, rocks and roots… To be continued.

***

After the third day, I started to feel the weight of my pack much more and my mind started to considerate how I could make it lighter. Complicated debate with myself, to be continued too… After one rest day today, my shoulder almost do not hurt, however the skin of my hips is a little irritated, which I am taking care of.

My muscles, especially in my legs, were a bit tight on the last morning, but at the end I felt great when I started to walk and spent the day with an amazing energy for the twenty beautiful kilometres until reaching Denmark! It is good to feel surprised by one self, and interesting to learn to listen and respect one’s body, especially when it offers so much, generously!

Randonner seule…

Hiking alone… And mentally, how were these first few days?

Vivre.

Yes, I faced a real solitude in these first four days. Starting just before a weekend, I expected to have to share the track and shelters with people, especially in the beautiful weather conditions. Well, actually not. I have seen no one after leaving Albany behind, passed a few nice people on the beach section of the second day, and a family with whom I exchanged a couple of sentences on the third day. I had each campsite for me alone and made myself a little home while setting my tent inside the shelters… Well, I will be honest… I felt only comfort and delight about this situation. I appreciate company of others and meeting people, but starting this way feels quite close to my vision of luxury. Being able to get close to myself straight away and live my experience my own way is more than satisfying. I felt full of a positive vibe and endless motivation for these four days, but also ready to be aware, to take care of myself, and to focus on each and every aspect of the experience. To live.

Actually, I had to face a tiny « uncomfortable » situation and I will talk about it just after. But the fact of being alone is very helpful, and I had noticed that when I was traveling by myself in New Zealand… When there is no one to listen to your complaints, it is easy to calm down very fast and to breath face to any sort of disappointment. Then, adapt and act consequently. That is it. After that, hiking and being happy again, because it is what I came to do and, really, there is much worst in life than this little issue, and there are also so many great aspects to think about in this exact same situation that it is pointless to think about it any longer… Yes, really, life is simple on the road, in a certain way, and it has positive effects mentally.

Arbres

In three nights in my tent, I caught up with my lack of sleep of the last months, yes, and of a few insomnia… I felt stress going away, my rhythm of life slowing down together with my heart beats. My senses opening, my smile getting wider. I came back to these feelings that I know so well and find each time I hike. And this feels awesome, like coming home…

***

Therefore, so far, the mental health challenge is rather inexistant. Actually I even laughed for myself when my little morning worries about crossing an inlet were gone away with a few sun rays. I had already passed this inlet without noticing… It was dry… However, just after, there were some rocks to climb next to powerful waves to reach the other side of the beach. But I was feeling calm and I took my time to not slip stupidly (it is easy to lose balance with a big backpack).

This is it, I am so ready for what is next. I can not wait!

Rochers sur la plage

Paysages, animaux, plantes ?

Landscapes, fauna, flora?

Beau, beau, beau… Magnifique ! Bonheur !

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful… Stunning! The endless views upon the ocean, from the top of big cliffs or on the long beach section, were breathtaking. And I had it all, sunshine and blue sky, romantic clouds and shy and magical sun rays, rain and grey sky with powerful waves, exceptional lights… Thank you Mother Nature… Temperatures were rather ideal and I was not cold at night… Everything seemed too perfect in these first few days… Plants everywhere, of an incredible diversity, a few forest parts, as a taser for what is coming next, and the hundreds of little wild flowers, like dots of colours and grace that make you shiver with joy… I loved it all. I actually did not expect these flowers, as I had been told that spring, from september to november, was THE season to admire them. I imagine that there are very much more and that it is magnificent, but honestly I have been quite spoilt in four days, as photos can tell. Happiness!

fleurs sauvages

I sang with the birds too, and I made a kangaroo jump away, as well as a… snake. Yes, only one, big, impressive, black, on the last day, finally. But he had got away from the track before I had time to slow down, so I passed by thanking him for letting me go. And then I was twice more careful on the following kilometres. I also met a huge spider in the toilets in the morning, probably just a kind huntsman, she was of a nice company. I had to destroy many spider webs across the track to be able to pass (other useful function of the hiking poles), surprising myself apologising to these eight legs ladies each time. When I could, I was going around or below, but this is not always possible. Yes believe it or not, it is a bit heart breaking to destroy the houses of these wonderful animals that are here home much more than me, somehow… Actually, sometimes I was going through a spider web I had not notice and I had it on my face, and well it is rather surprising… These spiders are building masters, their webs are solid and stretchy, good luck to get rid of it! I also met a group of little centipedes walking in a long queue… Quite fascinating in my opinion.

mille pattes

Other than that, I keep the best at the end, and they are always waiting for me with excitement… Mosquitoes and their girlfriends here who are big flies that bite badly, called « march flies« . Yes, well, typical, they have had a fest eating me. But I am going to use my mosquito spray with more intention in the next few days. Whatever, war is started.

Chemin

Hiking and eating, yes we always end talking about food don’t we…

There is when my little situation arrived. I will try to make it short, but basically for those who followed, I had proudly elaborated my morning porridge, home made with organic ingredients partly offered by Manna Wholefoods in Fremantle so I could make a donation to headspace, the association I am raising funds for… Well, one of the ingredients, and I suppose that it is the coconut milk powder, did not handle waiting in the box for a full month. On the first morning, I was getting ready to add boiling water to my mix when I noticed the smell and spat the little bit I had tasted. No, impossible to swallow this. Disappointment, frustration, anger toward myself. I hate throwing food away, especially of such high quality and in the situation of this project. I also had a few thoughts for the time and money spent in these breakfasts and the fact of having to throw them all away, when I will open my parcel at each rest town… Well, I packed everything back, put the 800 grams of breakfast of this section in my rubbish bag, grabbed a couple of cereal bars and went to see the sunrise from the lookout. I calmed down straight away. Staring at the wind farm I was going to pass during the day after having watched it tiny in the horizon from Albany, the colours of the morning, the absolute stillness… I breathed out and as explained above, it passed.

Moreover, I could not not think about how lucky I was to have planed « too much » food on my first section, so I did not have to fear about lacking it beside this incident… But also, much more importantly, I was thinking of the huge joy to have been spoilt by my talented friends before leaving. This comforting thought of the So Freo vegan pate and the delicious Ascend Trailfood magic potion inside my backpack quickly eased my mind and I smiled inside myself. I will just adapt, and next time I will know.

So Freo

Ascend Trailfood

Apart from that, I had lots of delicious food to enjoy on that section and I did not need anything else, so I do not have more comments about it for now. Very happy to prepare tea (herbal tea, with no caffeine) in the morning in one of my bottles so I can enjoy it later during the day after it has cool down, I never had this idea before and it is very pleasant.

Pensées supplémentaires…

Additional thoughts…

To finish, I would say that when you know why you are taking a challenge, whatever adventure it is, your energy follows. I would say that when you are ready to accept disappointments or surprises, you wait for them impatiently, even mosquitoes bites and shoulders pains. When you focus on breathing while hiking and on all the little details that make each scenery so unique, there is nothing more extraordinary than carrying a big pack and being independent for a few days… The feeling of freedom that arises from it is worth a few frictions.

Vue

I feel like I am kinda ecstatic on this beginning of adventure, I have an excitement and an enthusiasm that are pushing me more than ever. I am not sure how long it will last, but I am making the most of it. I am privilege to be able to live this experience, and happy, alive. I knew I needed it so I am enjoying it.

***

I noticed this surprising joy when I look back, to watch all the space I went by with the strength of my legs. Watching Albany disappearing in the distance, the wind farm dissolving in the horizon line, the huge beach I walked in for seven long kilometres hiding behind the next hill. Leaving behind the views I cherished the day before, getting ready for the next ones. Yes, I am on my way, and I am starting to learn acceptance and to let go on my grasp of what the past will keep for itself forever. I had to start this one day for sure…
